Mr. Justice Cooper returned from Auckland yesterday aftarnoon. Sub-Inspector Sheehan commenced duties in Wellington this morning. Mr. Justice Chapman, who has been! taking the Nelson eeesione, of the Supreme Court, returns to Wellington on Saturday. Messrs. J. and N. Tait have undertaken the direction of the world's tour of Madame Clara Butt and Mr. Kennerley Eumford. • Mr. Andrew Gray, of Wellington, returned f ram a. visit to the United Statesand Great Britain yesterday, after eight months' absence, Mr. I\ H. Dodd, late postmaster, Hastings, arrived in Wellington last night, en route to Westport, where liehas been appointed chief postmaster. Mr. J. Skivington, an early Kaiapoi settler, who has teen living many yearsin Oakland, California, was r a passenger by the Maitai from San Francisco today. Messrs. Percy R. Climie, C.E., and C. Carlyon Coates, M.E., of the firm_ of Climie, Coafces and Co., have received ■advice that they have been elected, foreign members of the Chartered Institute of Patent Agents, London. Their Excellencies the Governor and Lady Islington entertained the following guests at luncheon at Government House on Wednesday : — Hon. J. Carroll, Mr. Te Heuheu, Mr. J. Hislop and Mrs. Hislop, Dr. Eardwicke Smith and Mrs. Smith, Mr. J. Mackay, Dr. Filchett and Mrs. Mtclwtt, Mr. J.' Campbell and Mrs. Campbell. Mr. J. H. Cosgrave, an old Auckland Grammar School boy, is editor of the American "Everybody's Magaaine." Mr. Andrew Gray, of Wellington, met Mr. Coagravo recently in New York. Together as boys they edited the Auckland j Gianimar School Magazine. Mr. Cosgrave has been faithful to literature, 'hie career in America beginning in San Francisco. Mr. Stanley Grundy, who has been connected with the common law branch of Messrs. Chapman, Skerrett, Wylie, and Tripp's business, left for Auckland to-day, having accepted an appointment with Messrs. Nicholson and Gribben, solicitors, m that city. Before he left he was presented by the staff of his late employers uith a set of travelling bags. The presentation was made by Mr. A. Blair. Mr. Gruudy was secretary of the Wellington LatV Students' Society. Miss Amy Castles, the famous young Australian prima donna, arrived by tho Arahura last night, following a very successful tour of the West Coast. Miss Castles is looking forward keenly to her reappearance in Wellinggton on Saturday and Monday evenings next at tho Town Hall. Sheis accompanied by Herr Louis Ha.ttcnbach ('cellist), Herr Alexander Camphauson (baritone), and William Con way (pianist). A reception is to be given Miss Castles to-morrow (Friday) evening at the Grand ELoteL
