LATE SHIPPING.
B.M.S. MAITAI ARRIVES. AN UNEVENTFUL VOYAGE. Fj'ora San Francisco via Papeete and Raiwtonga. the Union Company's R.M.B. Maitai arrived in the stream at 10 a.m. to-day, and alter medical inspection berthed at Jervois.quay Wliart. After her departure from Auckland on the 14th January, fine weather with a smooth sea were experienced to Uarofonga, vhich was reached on the morning of the 19th. A stay of a. few hours was made, and flue weather was experienced on the way to Papeete, reached on, the morning of the 21st. Owing to Iteavy rain at this port a delay occurred in discharging caj-go. The vessel saaied lor San Francisco at 10.30 a.m. on the 22nd, and fine weather and smooth sea were experienced until within twenty-four hours of that port, when a. moderate southerly gale was met with and lasted until the Golden Gate was entered at 10.30 o'clock on the night of the 2nd February. A heavy cargo was loaded at San Francisco, and after embarking a large number of passengers the Maitai took he*' departure from San Erancisco at 3 p.m. on the Bth February. Moderately fine weather was experienced to Papeete, where arrival was made- on the 20th. A quantity of cargo was landed, and the veßsel Bailed again on the 21st. Fine weather was experienced to Rarotonga, reached on the 23rd. Here a "quantity of fruit was loaded, and the ship sailed for Wellington at 8.35 p.m. on the same day. Fine weather was experienced until nearing the New Zealand coast, when a thick fog and a heavy swell somewhat delayed the chip's progress till the concluding stage of the voyage. MAITAI'S CARGO. Cargo brought by the Maitai from San Francisco to-day consists of 19,385 bags barley, 400 cases canned goodb 10 packageb rubber liose, 15 barrels oil, 26 cases periodicals. 39 orates building paper, 5350 cases bananas., 727 bunches bananas, 345 cases oranges, and a quantity of sundries. EVERTON GRANGE AT WANGANUI. The Everton Grange arrived at Wanganui at 6 o'clock this morning. Sho leaves there to-morrow afternoon', for Picton. NEW ZEALAND PASSENGERS ON THE OTRANTO. The P. and 0. finer Otranto, which left London on. the 20th January, is bringing the following New Zealand passengers to Sydney :— Mr. and Mrs. C. B. PharAzya, Mr. H ,T Waid and Mr. Jones (for Wellington}; Mr", and Mrs. Barnard Brown and Miss Brown. (Wanganui); Mr. and Mrs. H. Colder (Auckland); also Mjgs H M. Stevens, Mr. and Mrs T. Stone, and Mr. F. W. Howatfc (Lyttelton). CRANLEY LEAVING SYDNEY. The local agents have been advised that the chartered bteamer Cranley, bound from New York, is expected to leave Sydney—at which port she is at present berthed —very shortly for Auckland. Tho Cranley left America ou the 24th December, and is ducat New Zealand about the 14th March. The Warrimoo is timed to leave Lyttelton at. 9 o'clock this evening, and is not expected, ac Wellington until about 9 a.m. to-moirow. The Union Company has been advised that the Mapourika reached Greymouth at 9< o'clock this morning, and will leave there on, the return voyage to Wellington at 9 to-night, calling at We&tport and Nelson on tho way over. In all probability the Wairau, which is expected to arrive at Wellington to-morrow from Foxtou, will sail again for Karamea. air. H. Owen, chief engineer of the Arapawa,, who goes ashore shortly on holiday leave, is to be relieved by Mr. C. Naismith, of tho Tutaneka'. It has been definitely decided that the Waihi, which is to replace the Blenheim for a few days, will bail for Blenheim to-night. The Blenheim's overhaul is expected to bo completed on Monday, on which day she will resume her usual running. in ;i recent issue the Nelson Mail pays a tribute to the Anchor Company's steamer Nikau. Commenting on the arrival of the yebsel at Nelson at G. 30 last Sunda-y morning, it says: —"The Nikau was the only vessel to keep her time, although she had a rough lime of it iv the Straits. The conditions have to be very bad before this gallant little, vessel has lo seek shelter or delay her <lepartuie." The Maorilaud Steamship Company has been advised that the ketch Argus leit Havelock yesterday morning with a consignment of timber for Easson's yards, Wellington. From Melbourne the death is reported of Captain E. T. J. Ncale, late of "£he Melbourne Steamship Company's steamer Kapunda. Joming the company as a junior officer the deceased rapidly worked his way up in the service, and at the time of his death he had at the compai atively early age of 40 years attained the responsible position of benior master oi the company's licet. Due at WeU'ngton next Tuesday from Wanganui the bteamer Breeze will leave on the same day for Dunedin and Timaru. Accoiding to the evidence taken by the Collector of Customs, the stoppage of the steamer Rosamond's engines during the storm on Smida>, while the vessel was on her way from Onehunga to Wellington, was due to the choking ol the condenser by v/ater which, escaped from the damaged after' ballast tank. j Newer pumps, of British manulacture, aro shortly to be installed at the Calliope Dock at Auckland.
