FIRES IN THE CITY.
« BOARDINGHOUSE DESTROYED. The Fire Brigade was called out at 4.15 a.m. to-day to attend to a fire in a wooden building, 38, Taranaki-street, owned by Mr. J. Dalrymple and occupied as a boardinghouse under the proprietorship of Mr. J. Knigge. The fire originated in one of the rooms on the ground floor, and quickly spread. The rooms on this level were all badly damaged, and those on the upper story also suffered considerably. About twenty people were residing on the premises, and? several, in addition to having narrow escapes, from burning, had their hands and faces cut in jumping through windows. The building was insured for £300 s in the Queensland office and for £200 in the Commercial Union. The contents wore covered by a policy for about £50. . An adjoining wooden building, used by R. and E. Tingey as ia glass storehouse, was slightly damaged. It is owned by Thomas Archibald. The contents were insured for £200 in the New Zealand office and £150 .in the Guardian office. ' Later on, afc 7.23, the brigade was again called oub to 282 land 284, Vic-toria-street, a three-storied brick building with the ground floor unoccupied, the next tenanted by the Colonial Tinware Company, and the top floor by Clark and Co., electroplates. The fire originated in a corner of the building on the ground floor, and burnt its way through to the top in a confined space. The damage done is not extensive. The building is owned by S. Luke and C0.,and is insured for JS2OOO in the Atlas office. The Colonial Tinware Company were uninsured. Only very slight uamwas uninsured.
