WATER-POWER SCHEMES. ENGINEERS APPOINTED.
The two principal appointments connected withthe work of developing our water-power resources have been made by the Government. Mr. Evan Parry, electrical engineer, of London, has been appointed engineer-in-charge of the works, and Mr. L. Birks, at -present en-gine&r-m-charg& at Rotorua, has been appointed assistant electrical engineer. Mr. Parry was appointed out of 197 applicants from England and New Zealand. He is forty-five years of age, and occupies a high position in his profession. He has had wide experience in hydro-electrical undertakings, and the preparation of plans, and i& now associated with Dr. Horace Parshall, consulting engineer. The salary is £800 a yeah In order to make a selection out of th© English applicants, the High Commissioner was instructed to associate himself with Sir William Preeos, ex-Engjneer-in-Charge of Telegraphs in England. In the absence of that gentleman the electrical adviser to the Board of Trade acted with the High Commissioner, and their choice fell on Mr. Parry. Mr. Birlcs was born in South Australia, and in 1895 went to England as the holder of an engineering scholarship. After gaining valuable practical experience in the Old Country he, in' 1900, was appointed electrical engineer at Adelaide University, and later was engaged by the New South Wales Government as assistant electrical engineer to the Sydney tramways. In 1903 he was appointed electrical engineer to the Christchurch tramways, and he was also lecturer in electrical engineering at Canterbury College. Then he became consulting engineer to the New Zealand Electrical Construction Company, and in 1906 he was appointed engineer-in-charge of Government works in the Rotorua district. , Mr. Parry will be in New Zealand in the course of a couple of months.
