Ruapehu left Plymouth ior Wellington, via Capetown and Hobart, on •Saturday last. The steamer should arrive here on the 4th Apiil. KOWHAI TO IXAUGUE.ATE NEW SERVICE. It is understood that the Union Company's new cargo iteamer Kouhai is shortly to open up a new cargo tervice between Dunedin, Oamaru, Timaju, Lyttelton, Wellington, Napier, and Gisborne. The vessel is ! due io Wellington next Thursday from south, | and will leave on the tame day for Napier and Gisborne. A "SHIP" RAT-TRAP. An ingenious contrivance hi the shape of a rat-trap and disc combined was exhibited last ■week' on the Union liner Marama at the I Queen's Wharf, Melbourne. The acparatus, which is the invention of Mr. H. L. Worthmgton, marine engineer, oi Sydney, is designed, not only to prevent rats going to and irom shore along a ship's hawser, but to enectually trap any iodents making the attempt. The invention, which has been favourably reported upon by the Health authorities and shipping experts, consists of a ritt-tiap flirted between two 24ia discs. Combining strength with lightness, the apparatus is of simple debign, and ■will fit any size hawser, being held in position by poweiful steel springs. Whilst the old-fashioned discs keep rats on board ship the new appliance allows them to migrate from the vessel through ihe disc only to find themselves the next instant, securely confined in the trap, which is large enough to accommodate a number at the one time. The efficacy of the apparatus having been satisfactorily tested, it is now being fitted to the steamers of the Umon line. The Hinemoa, which left Wellington afc 8 o'clock this morning for Cook Strait lighthouses, should arrive here again on Monday evening or Tuesday morning. Due back at Wellington to-morrow from Blenheim the coastal steamer Wairau will sad agam on Saturday tor the same yport. She -will load pioduce for Wellington, afterwards taking coal at Puponga for Foxton. At Picton the Wairuna, which is lea-wag-Welh'ngton to-day, will discharge the remainder of her cargo of coal from Newcastle. She -will then proceed to Westport, where she ioads for Auckland. The steamer Papanui, formerly owned by the New Zealand Shipping Company, is now ea route to Melbourne from Japan. Afc Melbourne the vessel will be fitted out to take passengers to London for the Coronation. She is fixed to leave Melbourne on the loth April, and her accommodation will consist ot oneclass only. The Blackball Coal Company's collier Nga-hei-e bails to-day at 5 p.m. for Greymouth to load ior Auckland. Ov/ing to the recent heavy weather the auxiliary schooner Waipu, which left Motiti, Bay of Pientj, on the Sth inst., had a slow paosage down the coasr, to Wellington. She arrived hi pqrfc yesteiday, and berthed this morning afc Mo. 13, Queen's Wharf to discharge a cargo of maize. The Rimutaka arrived to-day from Bluff and berthed at the King's Wharf. To-inoriow bhe will sail for Tokomaru Bay and Napier to continue Homeward loading. Before proceeding to Sydney the Inga, which left Wellington last evening, calls ac Akitio and Hokianga. At both places she will load timber. From London, via Australia, Auckland, and Napier, the Tyser steamer Muritai arrived at Wellington this morning, an* berthed at the King's Whart. It is expected that discharge of her Home cargo will be completed on Saturday, when bhe will pioceed to Bluft. Intimation has been received by Messrs Johnston and Co. that the Norwegian barque Margit (formeily Cia^g'.ands)- has been chattel ed by the Gracie,. Beazley Line to load a. general cargo afc Livei'ix>ol ior New Ply'■mouth. Of 1241 tons gioss, the Margit is a steel .vessel built in IS9I by C. J. Bigger, of Londonderry. Her present owners are Chr., Nielsen and Co., of Larvick, Norway.
