WANTED-RAIN.

«• COUNTRY SHORT OF FEED. 1 Rain is wanted very badly in most parts of New Zealand just now. The Jlanawabu, from Paekakariki, is dryer than it has been since the drought of 1903. Far about three weeks there has beimi hardly a drop of rain, and what did fall was? local in its range. Feed is running very short, and the pnice of stock is falling in consequence. Unless rain comes quickly and in abundance the prospects of feed for the winter will be> very depressing. The country is brown and burnt up all along the line, xad grass and swamp fires aa - e starting in many places. On Thursday the smoko from bush fires completely obscured the hills. The line weather and hot sim is ripening apples very quickly, but the dairy farmer, unless he has green feed provided in, maize nnd other fodder plants, will feel the ! pinch. The matron of the Wellington Ros*. pital acknowledges with thanks the following gifts for the use of the patients -.—lllustrated papers and magazines, Her Excellency Lady Islington, Hon. Miss Stapleton-Cotton, Lady Ward, Mesdames Owens and Taylor, Miss Coates, and Messrs. Richardson Bros j children's books, Mesdames Coverdab and M'Ktnner, Miss Nancy Lane, and the Bible and Tract Depot ; flowers, Lady Beatrice Kerr-Clark, Mesdames Howell, Smith, and Sydney Kirkcaldie. and St. Thomas-'s Church ; clothes and old linen, Mesdames Pike, Smith, and Winder j magazines and flowers for fever ward, W. Bailey. 1
