THE TURF. NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By Sir Bedivere.) In view of the brilliant form she showed at Trentham, Lady Medallist was bound to be well looked after in the handicap for the Taranaki Cup. Even under 9st 111b she will be entitled to the greatest respect if she sees the post. She is only set to meet Mcndip and Vi on 71b and 31b worse terms respectively, than she did in the Wellington Handicap, and though the higher scale of weights renders her task considerably more difficult, she must have a fair chance of again beating them. Parable has been given 141b more to carry than she had in the Consolation Handicap, and has thus received her full deserts. She is now within 61b of Merrivonia, and if both should strip fit and well, I should prefer the prospects of Mr. Ames's representative, who at Trentham made all her own running. Among the light weights, Lady Menschikoff reads as a likely customer. She is a smart little mare, and if she can get to the end of a ten furlong course she will take all sorts of beating. The C.J.C. Summer meeting will commence to-morrow, when the Filly Stakes , and the Midsummer Handicap will be decided. Prim, Coroniform, and Martine are a distinctly useful trio for any trainer to have under his care. Colleen Mary promises to be a bad one to beat in the Filly Stakes, in which, however, she- may meet something of better class than she has done hitherto. Mazurka's appearance in this event would be awaited with interest, and North Island sportsmen would be pleased to hear of the success of Bronze.
