Sailed— Wanaka, for Oamaiu. MAEAMA, FROM SYDNEY. This week's direct boat from Sydney— the Marama— arr'ved in the stieam at 9.15 a.m. to-day, and berthed at the Queen's Wharf about one hour later. The trip across from Sydney was uneventful, fine weather prevailing thioughout. Imports by the vessel were : — 974 felloes, 25 casks team, 450 sacks pollard, 31 cases tobacco, 250 bags rice, 290 cases soap, 800 pieces timber, 400 bags salt, and transhipments ex Arawatta, Yarra, Hamm, Greisenau, Schwaben, Malwa, Grantala, Guthrie, and Moana. THE STAR OF INDIA. The new Tyser steamer Star of India, a description of which has. already appeared in the Post, arrived in port this morning from London, via Australia, Auckland , and Napier. The "vessel berthed at the King's Wharf, and on completion of discharge of her Home cargo will immed-ately commence loading for England BOOKED FOE AVONMOUTH. Leaving Picton on Saturday for Avonmouth direct, the F.H.B. steamer Nairnshire is taking the following passengers from the Dominion : — Mesdames Aitcheson-Sin-'th, Pair, Messrs Hammond, Mace, Ronaid, Aitciieton-Smith, Mortimer, Brownlie, John Smith, Mayer. TAKEN BY CLAN GEAXT. Following is a summary of the cargo taken by the Scales chartered steamer Clan Grant, ■nhicli left Auckland on the 25th January for the United Kingdom and Continent :— 2O casks tallow, 064 sacks peas, 8 bales sheep skins, 20 casks pelts, 50 dumps tow, 551 bales tow, 1354 bales hemp, SSO sacks kauri dust, 1250 cases kauri gum, 871 sacks kauri gum, 26 bales leather, 5 casss and 1 package of steel, 350 pieces timber, and 77G2 bales wool. BELIEF CEEWS FOE THE SQUADRON. H.M.S. Edgar, the first-class cruiser -which is bringing relief crews for H.M.S. Pegasus and Sealark, will leave Portsmouth on the 20th February for Sydney. The ketch Lizzie Taylor is undergoing an overhaul at Lyttelton. The steamer Kamona is to take London transhipments c? Mamari to Nelson. After considering the evidence taken at the preliminary enquiry concerning the sinking of the tug Pilot, the Marine Department has decided that no further investigation is necessary. The red beacon in the cross channel above Shag Point, Manukau haibour, was knocked down by the steamer Eimu on Monday, and pending repa : rs a red buoy will work tne channel. From London, via Auckland, the Shaw-Savill steamer Mamari arrived here last evening, and berthed at No. 16, Jervois-quay Wharf. She is to leave again on the 4th for Picton, afterwards proceeding to Timaru. The Holmdale, which grounded on the sandbank at Otago Heads on Sunday, was floated oft on Monday. The vessel sustained no damage. The coastal steamer Storm will not call at Wellington to-day. She is proceeding direct to Wanganui from Lyttelton. The long-conceived scheme for making Paris a seaport by constructing a ship canal upwaids from Eouen is again before the Chamber of Deputies, and has gained the support of 150 deputies. The cost is estimated at 145 million francs, and it is calculated that jt would bung in an annual income of 20 millions *o the State, besides saving half a million every year now spent in keeping the river navigable. Towards the end of this mouth the Eimutaka will visit Nelson to load apples and general cargo ior Home. This morning the Maoriland Company's steamer Ennerdale was placed on the Slip tor /overhaul. She will be ready for sea again to-moiiow, when departuie will be taken for Greymouth. AVith a full load of coal the Rakanoa is expected to clear Greymouth this evening for Wellington.
