PROTECTION OF ANIMALS.

o ANNUAL MEETING OF SOCIETY. The seventeenth annual meeting- of the Wellington S.P.C.A. was held yesterday afternoon, Mr. J. S. Jameson occupying the chair. There was a good attendance of members. The chairman, after apologising for tho unavoidable absence of His Excellency the Governor, moved the adoption of the annual report and balanee-shept, and complimented the officials on the work of the year. In seconding the motion, Mr- A. L. Herdman, M.P., said it was quite cloar that this institution, though small, was doing much good work in the suburbs. People freely helped appeals to aid human beings, but when it came to supporting a cause for the relief of dumb animals, it was difficult to arouse enthusiasm. He hoped that the ensuing year would bo as successful as the ono just closed. Mr. Seed briefly returned thanks for the remarks concerning him. Mr. W. Watson said that much of the pain <nflicted on animals was owing to ignorance of methods of treatment. He praised the work of the authorities of St. Patrick's College for sending 3b scholars to the Technical School to receive instruction in cruelty prevention, etc. The police, he said, should have some knowledge on this subject, so as to be able to judge whethor an animal was being treated cruelly or not. . , Tho motion was carried.
