RETURNS FOR WELLINGTON. The bankruptcy returns for the Wellington district for the year ending 31st December are now available. During that period 141 debtors weie adjudicated bankrupt on their own petitions, and 32 on petition by creditors. The assets in the estates involved amounted to ±:1b1,003, of which £83,645 was secured to creditors, and the liabilities (including amounts secured to creditors) totalled £87,034. The amount of the assets realised by the assignee was £34,365, and the amount of debts proved was £71,776. The amount paid in dividends (including preferential and secured claims) was £14,409. Other payments were: — Preferential claims, £3654; secured claims, £2288; Government commission, £1087 ; costs of actions, solicitors' and supervisors' fees, £2264 ; expenses incurred in carrying on estates for the benefit of creditors, £5161 ; balance in bank on Ist January, laiO, £7011 ; balance in bank on 51st December, 1910, £10,707. The Wellington bankruptcy district consists of the districts of Wanganui; Palmerston North, -Dannevirke, Pahiatua, Napier, Masterton, Blenheim, Nelson, Westport, Reefton, GreymouLh, and i Hokitika. There were 34 bankruptcies at Wanganui, 25 at Palmerston North, o at jLiannevirke, 4 at Pahiatua., 17 at Napier, 24 at Masterton, 6 at Blenheim, 8 at Nelson, 8 at Westport, 1 at Reefton, 6 at Greymouth, 3 at Hokitika and 34 at Wellington. Mr. Charles Marter, chief sub-editor of the Sydney Daily Telegraph, formerly of Wellington, arrived from Sydney by the Marama to-day on a three weeks' visit to the Dominion. At the Supreme Court to-day hi 6 Honour Mr. Justice Chapman agreed that the charge of assault preferred against Matthew Cooper should not be heard before Saturday, and the charge of wounding with intent against Henry Joseph Clements not before Monday. Cabled advice hae been received by the New Zealand Shipping Company tothe effect that the Papaa-oa arrived at London yesterday, a/id the Rotorua at Monte Video on Monday last. A highly successful horticultural show was opened at St. Thomas's Hall. Newtown, this afternoon. The exhibits will be on view to-night, and to-morrow afternoon and evening. Tha Bishop of Melanesia, who arrived from the South Island this morning, will deliver an address in the Concert Chamber of the Town. Hall tonight. Tho Star Pictures at St. Thomas's Hall, Nowtown, will not be shown to-night or to-morrow night, owing to the hall being otherwise engaged, but will resume on Friday night.
