PRECEDENT REVIVED. IF A REGENCY IS REQUIRED.
A JUDICIAL COMMISSION. TO EXECUTE FUNCTIONS OF THE CROWN. By Telegraph.— Preps Association.— Copyright. (Received January 31, 8.10 a.m.) LONDON, 30th January. It is understood that in the event of a Regency being required during the visit of the King and Queen to India, the precedent will be revised of -swearing the Lords Justices to execute in commission the functions of the Crown. [Under the earlier English Kings, Councils of Regency were occasionally appointed, consisting of Lords spiritual and temporal. During an illness of George DII. in 1788 a Regency Bill was brought in, providing for the Prince of Wales to be Regent, though a strong endeavour was made to get a council of judges. The King, however, recovered, and the Bill was dropped. In 1840 a Bill was passed providing for Prince Albert, in certain contingencies, becoming Regent.]
