♦ Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., presided at to-day's sitting of the Magistrate's .Court. One first-offender, who had indulged jto excess, was fined ss, with a 24 hours' .option. Archibald M'Lean, who last month was convicted of being an idle and disorderly person and sentenced to a month's imprisonment, denied an allegation of drunkenness. Constable Hall jjave evidence that M'Lean was "very drunk," and was hanging on to a lamp-post." Accused then wanted to know why he had (been charged with being an idle and disorderly person, but the magistrate told him to confine his questions- to his 'drunkenness. M'Lean then admitted that he was drunk last night. He was. convicted, and fined 20s, in default sentenced to seven days in gaol. A well-dressed young man named Francis Hurman Williams was charged that, on the 25th January, at Christchurch, he obtained the sum of £5 from Charles Henry Fox by means of a valueless cheque, with intent to defraud. Chief-Dective Broberg stated that accused had been arrested by Detectives Kemp and Hammond on a warrant issued at Christchurch, and the prosecutor asked for a remand of accused to appear at Christchurch to-morrow. This was granted. , n On the application, of Mr. A. Dunnj bail was allowed, Williams in a personal bond of £25 and one surety of £25. Defendant was described as a showman. This was his first appearance. .
