The builder's avecation is one in which ft very conlpre.h2nr.ivo knowledge is required : thus he must bo acquainted with tho principles cf mechanism, carpentry, joinery, etc., the strength and resistance of materials, the arrangement cf plans for the greatest possible, degree of convenience on the smallest Bpaee, and at the least expense, their transference to the ground ; the arrangement and construction of drains, sewers, and vent shafts, the arrangement of gutters, cf roefs to get sufficient fall; the protection of walls from damp, of timber from moisture and stagnant air, tho cost of material* and labour, and J
the quantity of each to produce certain results. One of the most expert in these sciences in the Levin district is Mr. G. K. Douglas, and the thoroughness and skill with" which all his operations are conducted find excellent illustration in the various structures which have been erected by him in Levin, and other parts of the Horowhenua district. Great demands are made on Mr. Douglas's time. He has been entrusted with the building of practically 75 per cent, cf the private dwellings and ether buildings throughout Levin, and the ever-increasing building trade conducted by him is a testimony to his honest methods. Mr. Douglas has. been a resident of that district fcr about thirteen years, and besides being a hard worker himself, is a big employer of labour. Plans are prepared by him,- and estimates are also given fcr all classes of work usually assccijated 1 with tho builder's trade. The neat and artistic design of many of the principal residence? of the town has often been commented on by visitors and others, and it is interesting for the public to know that the lion's, share of the plans for these places has been prepared and the houses erected by Mr. Douglas.
