HOSPITAL LIGHTING.
'"In reply to Mr. Ferguson's letter in vesterday^s Post, it may be pointed out," stated the Mayor (Mr. T. M. Wilford) to-day, £: that the .proposal to supply current is not only to the hospital, but to all institutions within, the city under the control of the Wellington Hospital and Charitable Aid Board. Mr. Ferguson's assertion that there Avill be a serious loss in revenue from the lighting of the board's institutions other than the hospital is an exaggeration. The board's business as a whole would be undoubtedly profitable to the corporation. ''With regard to the 30 per cent. los3 in distribution, this loss is included, in figure 0.94 per unit cost of generation. In all the balance-sheets of the Electric Lighting Department the costs per unit are taken on the units sold, not the units generated, as Mr. Ferguson infers. It will thus be apparent to Mr. Feiguson that the foundation for his argument is wrongly based. "The estimate of 22,000 units consumption refers' to lighting only, and not to heating, which it will be seen at once disposes of the suggestions made. '■>With regard to the paragraph in Mr. Ferguson's letter wherein he asks whether the correct percentage or" return on the capitsl outlay should not be £2 3s 8d instead of £11 3s 2A per cent., it is now evident, on further analysis that the city ■will obtain a return on the capital outlay of £12 2s 7d per cent., which improves the position iroin tke city's point of view."
