SWIMMING.
THORNDON CLUB. Tha "final" of tho Thorndon Club's 150 yds race was "decided at Thorndon Baths last evening. On the showing in the heat, tho event looked a "good thing" for J. H. King, and bo it proved to be, for this swimmer won with plenty to I spare. There was a great race between Healy (scr.) and Briee (2sec) for second place, and the latter just managed to gain the judge's verdict. , Other starters were — Wareham and- Bruce. Young Wareham swam a splendid race, beating Bruce home. Roy Nelson, wlio also qualified for the final, was an absentee. Ihe Tnorndon Club's next race is set down for Wednesday, Ist February. The distance will be 200 yds, and it is expected that several visiting swimmers will compete. SWIFTS CLUB-SMITH CUP. The final of the 100 yds distance of a series of races for the Smith Cup was decided by tho Swifts last evening. Tho result was as follow :— Smith (Bsec), 1; H. Jenkinson (9sec), 2; B. C. Freyberg (scr), 3. Also started: L. Blundell (14sec), A. M'Lean (9seo), A. M. Smith (9sec), H. Mulhns (7sec), E. Levy (7sec), G. R. Patorson (sseo), E. E. Jenkinson (ssec). Time, 70 3-sseo. CARNIVAL ON SATURDAY. The principal attraction at the Swifts •Swimming Club's Carnival at Te Aro Baths next Saturday will bo tho 500 yds Mying Squadron Teams' Championship 'for the "Walker and Hall" Cup. Thorndon, Swifts, and Wellington Clubs have entered, and a first-class race is expected. Members of the respective teams have been training rery hard, each intent on doing his very best to uphold the prestige of his club. There will also be tho usual handicap teams' race, for which a large entry has been 'ecoived. Diving and novelty events aro included, so mere should bo plenty to interest the spectators. The heats in the 50yds sprint will be decided this evening, and only the finals will take place on Saturday. Altogether, the carnival promises to bo very successful. Afternoon tea will bo provided, and the Tramways Band will play selections during tho afternoon. LYALL BAY SURF CLUB. A special meeting of the Wellington Swimming Club was held last night, when it was decided to constitute the Lyall Bay Surf Club as d. separate body. Hitherto this club has been generally recognised a branch of the swimming club. Officers for tho newly-formed club were elected as follow ii — Patron, Sir Robert Stout; president, Mr.- A. A. Atkins; vicepresidents, Messrs. T. M. Wilford, J. Fletcher, H. Mcrfrah, J. E. Fitzgerald, G. S. Hill, A. Levy, A. Leslio, J. Fleming, T. Shields, and L. P. Blundell; captain, Mr. W. G. Morpeth; vice-captain, Mr. E. Levy; secretary and treasurer, Mr. R. O'Flahorty ; committee, Messrs, J. Gosling, W. Ellis, B. C. Freyberg, H. M. Mnllins, and J. Stratford. The rules that tormorly governed the branch wore adopted, subject to Iho approval of tho committee.
