ALLEGED ASSAULT.

A young man named Hefiry Joseph Clements appeared before Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M /( at the Magistrate's Court thi3, afternoon to answer a charge of having intended to do grievous bodily harm to Vance Clifford Hickok on the 14th January. Mr. Pizgibbon represented acoused. Dr. Simpson stated yesterday that the sufferer sustained a number of scalp cuts and a serious wound in the neck. Altogether, about fifteen stitcbeß had had to oa put in. The wounds might havo been inflicted by tho top of a glass bottlo. There would be a permanent disfigurement by a scar in the neck. Complainant, a baker, residing at 11, . Rhodes-street, Newtown, related that, in. company with a young woman named Laura M'Kenzie, ho went to the lafcter's residence, about 11 p.m. on the night in. question; left his friend, and as ho was going away, heard his name called. He turned to go back, and saw accused by tho gate; meanwhile the young woman came towards him, and in consequence of what she said, witness went to the house. Witness said to accused : "Do you call yourself a man for striking a lady"?" Some words passed, and witness told accused to apologise. Instead of that, the latter used bad language. As witness turned toward the woman, he received a hit over the head with a bottle, and liquid flowed over him.
