AFFAIRS IN PERSIA.

¦ ? CONDITIONS IN THE SOUTH. BRITAIN AWAITING RESULTS. By Telegraph.— Press Association.— Copyright LONDON, 24th January. A British Not© has been despatches in reply to the recent Persian Not stating that tranquillity had been res tored in the southern provinces, am expressing th-e hope that Great Bri tain would acquiesce in a ten per cent increaser in the Customs duties at tin Persian Gulf ports. The British reply points out that th? improved conditions in Southern Per sia are due to the excessive severity o the winter. Britain, however, wil await the results of the Persian mea sure before insisting on her demand; for supervision by Indian officers. The British Government is unable t< consent to a surcharge of ten per cen turn on the southern import duties sine© it would fall mainly on Britisl imports, unless Persia in return agreec that British officers should organise thi gendarmerie m the south.
