HAWKE CUP. AN EXCITING FINISH. [BY TELEGRAPH-PRESS ASSOCIATION]

PALfiIERSTOJST, 24th January. The Lord Hawke Cup match, Rangitikei v. Manawatu, provided a sensational finish yesterday, when the visitors, after being in an almost hopeless minority on the first innings, pulled off the match by a couple of runs by splendid uphill play. On yesterday's play they were 105 runs to the bad, but. a fine stand was made by one or two batsmen, notably J. Broad, who carried his bat for the splendid total of 122. Cook compiled a well played 44, Hussey 29, and Signal 22, and they also helped materially. When the last wicket fell the score was 281. Ongley was the most successful bowler, taking four wickets for 61 runs. .aven then, however, Manawatu's task was not apparently very difficult, and for a time they looked like pulling the match off. Young again played good cricket for his 36, Gkddspring compiled 34 in his usual patient manner, Greer hit of 39, and Bartlett made 25. But the tail did not possess a winning streak, and, amid excitement, the last wicket fell to Hussey when only three were wanted to win.
