UNIVERSITY SENATE.
APPOINTMENT OF A REGISTRAE. [BY EBLEGBAPH— E&ESS ASSOCIATION.] CHKISTCHUECH, 24th Jan. The New Zealand University Senate took in committee this afternoon the question of the election of a registrar in succession to Mr. J. W. Joynt, who resigned last year. There were nine candidates for the position, and the system of balloting adopted was to pair the men and vote on each pair, the .scheme working out similar to a tennis tournament draw. Several ballotß were taken, and finally it was announced that Mr. Barclay Hector, Assistant-Regis-trar, who has been Acting-Registrar since Mr. Joynt resigned, had been elected to the position. Mr. Hector, who is a son of the late Sir James Hector, has been connected'with the University for sixteen years past. In February, 1899, he was appointed. assistant to Mr. J. W. Joynt, Registrar ; and at the Senate meeting of 1904 he waß appointed Assistant-Regis-trar. At the same time Mr. Joynt was granted six months' leave of absence, and Mr. Hector was appointed ActingRegistrar for that period. At the special meeting of the Senate of April, 1910, Mr. Joynt tendered his resignation, and Mr. Hector has been the Acting-Registvar ever since. On many occasions he had acted as Registrar for periods varying from three weeks to two months, and, all told, he has actually carried on the business of the University almost single-handed for very, nearly two.-comp]e|g yeajau
