PETONE AND HUTT ITEMS.

Various sports events at the annual picnic of the Petone Woollen Mills (he-M at Day's Bay on Saturday) resulted as follows : — Married Ladies' Race, Mr*. Ball, 1 ; Mis. Grant, 2. Swimming Eace, 11. Hope. 1 : T. Price, 2. Youn« Ladies' Race, Miss Mellward, 1 ; Miss Moorland, 2. Novelty Eace, H. Hug;h, 1; T. Dent, 2. Married Men's Race, A. Wright, 1 ; F. Ball, 2. The Petone Municipal Band, at present training for the coming bands' contest, played an attractive programme of music\on the Recreation Ground on Sunday afternoon. The selections included two contest pieces, "L'Africane" and "Falstaff." During the campaign preceding the •next local optical poll, the Hutt Nolicense League 'will be represented at Taita by a committee of residents, whose executive is as follows :—Chairman, Mr. J. Field ; secretary, Mr. G. Mabev, junr. ; representative to Electoral "Council, Mr. tt. Watt. Consequent upon the fact that it finds it has now less need for legal and engineering advice than, ib used to have, the Hutt River Board resolved— at its last meeting— that it will in future be unnecessary for the solicitor or the engineer to attend ordinary meetings. Should the board wish to nave the advice of either on any matter coming before it, they will be asked to attend. It was made quite clear at the meeting that members were fully alive to the good and faithful work performed in the interests oi the board by the two officers in question.
