FROZEN SOUTH.

DR. MAWSON'S EXPEDITION. SIR E. SHACKLETON APPROVES. EAISING FUNDS. By Telegraph.— Prees Asßoeiation.— Copyright. (Received January 19, 10.20 a.m.) MELBOURNE, This Day. Sir Ernest Shaekleton has cabled approving Dr. Mawson's proposed purely Australian Antarctic expedition. Mr. Samuel Horden, of Sydney, has donated £1000 to the fund, making the total £6000. Dr. Mawson and Professor Masson interviewed Senator Pearce and asked for Government assistance for the expedition. They urged its value to Australia in the shape of possible mineral discoveries, and sealing and fishing enterprises, as well as its scientific importance. Cabinet consideration of the request was promised. [The expedition will probably start from Melbourne in about November of this year. Its objects will be scientific and economic. It will make no dash for the Pole, but will explore the 2400 miles of coastline between Cape Adare and Grauss Berg Point, in Kaiser William Land, at which the German expedition wintered. Its work" is expected to fill in the gaps between the Shackleton and the Grauss expeditions. The expedition, as stated, will start from Melbourne, the point to be arrived at being due south of it, and its main Antarctic base v*as to be in Adeleland. There will be other bases along the coastline and inland, and exploring trips will be made by sledge and motor. The area covered will be made ■within the range of wireless communication from the Bluff. Australian geological and zoological problems are expected to be solved, and it is possible that rich ore deposits might be found. The problem of former connection between Australia, South Africa, South America, and Antarctica will be further investigated. A good deal of new mapping work will be done, and meteorological and other observations will supplement those of the Scott expedition.]
