UNITED STATES RETURNS. The new census, among other things gives the payment received by clergy' men oi varions denominations throughout the United Statps. According lo the census there are 164,830 Christian clergymen and 1084 Jewish rabbis in the country. This number has been increasing yearly to the extent of <W)OQ. The total amount of salary paid these clergymen and rabbis last year was nearly £20,000,000, while the whole expenditure for religious purposes, v.-as £60,000,000. The Baptist and Methodist denomma tions, combined, have 5 per cent. rco r 2 than hah' tho entire ntimber of cleigvmen in the country. 111 cities having 300,000 population or more the average salaries are: Presbyterian, £490; Congregational, £3SO; Reformed, £390; Baptist, £360; Episcopal £360 ; Jewish, £300 ; Catholic, £140 ; . Some of the denominations provide a parsona-ge. Unitarians receive the highest salaries of any in country towns and small places, the average for this sect in towns, villages, etc., being £390. Christian Science readers receive £48 in cities. The Methodist clergymen received the greatest sums in bulk of the clergymen in any denomination, the sum they received being £3,a30,000. In New York City and Brooklyn a number of clergymen receive £3000' to £6000 per annum. The total church membership ie 32,036,445, of which the Protestants have 20,287,742, the Catholics* 12,079,142, and Jews 101,457. In Protestant . bodies the membership is practically all adult ; among the J*ewe only heads of families are reported as members, hence its strength ie greatly underrated ; with the Catholics all baptised persons, including infants, are returned as members. In the membership of Protestant churches 39.3 per cent, ane male, and 60.7 per cent, female, in the Catholic 49.3 per cent, are male, and 50.7 per cent, female.
