KING'S PRIZE FRAUD.
PIGGOTT FOUND GUILTY- OF FALSE PRETENCES. SENTENCE PASSED. By Telegraph.— Press Association.— Copyright, SYDNEY, Ist December. J. W. Piggott, a member of the Tramway Rifle Club, has been found guilty of false pretences in obtaining £100- arid 4 badge in corrueetion with the shooting for the King's Prize at the HandwicK rifle shooting meeting. Tlie jury a strong recommendation for mercy, on the ground of th« accused's previous good character. The judge sentenced Piggott to t\Mlv« months' hard labour, the sentence to bo deferred on the finding of sureties for the prisoner's good behaviour during th« next twelve months. The sureties were immediately forthcoming. [In the final stage of the shooting for the King's a scoring card was produced crediting Piggott with 49 out of a possible 50. He was accordingly hailed as King's _ prizeman.. Subsequently, however, it was found that no one had seen the shoot, and he was called upon to produce evidence. On further enquiry, the score was declared to be a oogus one, and he admitted that he had noi fired at all at the 1000 yds range. He was thereupon disqualified for life.]
