PARLIAMENT.
IEGBSLATSVE COUNCIL. The Council continued its sitting after The Post went to press yesterday. On a division, the motion moved by the Hon. H. P. Wigram, congratulating the Government on conserving the waterpowers of the country, and urging that only one scheme should be put in hand at once, was defeated by 16 votes to o'. STONE QUARRIES. A Message was received from the House objecting to new clause 14, embodied in the Stone Quarries Bill, on the grounds that it was neither necessary nor desirable, ''that the provisions of the Factories Act should apply to stone quarries." The Attorney-General explained that some quarries producing manufactured stone, ior asphalt or other purposes, for instance, would be regarded as factories, and were so rogarded by the Crown Land Department. He moved that the Council • should insist on its amendments. This was agreed to on the voices, and Messrs. Jones, Paul, and the AttorneyGeneral were appointed managers to draw up reasons. LANDS SETTLEMENT. The third reading of the Lands Settlement Finance Bill produced another debate. The Hon. G. Jones leading off, and being replied to by the Attorneygeneral on lines already reported. The Bill was passed. The Secret Commissions Bill, Post and lelegraph Amendment Bill, Noxious Weeds Amendment Bill, and Counties Amendment Bill were read a second time. The Contagious Diseases Repeal Bill «a& passed. The Council, rose at 4.30 p.m.
