PERSONAL MATTERS.
Dr. Gibbs returned from the South this morning. Mr. R. B. Vincent, Assistant Secretary to the Treasury, is indisposed, and unable to attend to his duties. Sir Joseph Ward, the Hon. A. R. Guinness, and several members of both branches of the Legislature arrived from the South this morning. Mr. Kerr Clark, private secretary to His Excellency the Governor and Lady Kerr Clark were passengers by the Mokoia from the South this morning. Mr. E. T. Taylor, of Kilbirnie, who has been revisiting Great Britain after an absence of nearly thirty years, returned to Sydney by the Orontes, and will reach Wellington by the Moana to-mor-row. Mr. J. H. Board, tho> Gloucestershire professional, arrived by the Ruahine yesterday to resume "coaching" under the Hawkes Bay Cricket Association. This is his second season in New ZeaI land.' i Mr. 1 A. Hamilton, Director of the Dominion Museum, will represent the Wellington Philosophical Society at the meeting of the general council of the Association fox tbe Advancement of Science, to be Held in Sydney 9th to 14th January next. It is understood (states a Press Association telegram) that the Governor is experiencing some difficulty in securing a suitable residence in Christchurch or its vicinity. Lord Islington has, however, been offered, and has accepted,' the use of Mr. R. Heaton Rhodes's residence, "Elmwood," Papanui-road, in November. Mr. Ernest Gerard, who has occupied the position of Official Assignee at Auckland for several years, is severing his connection with the Public Service, I in order to enter into business on his own account. Mr. GeraTtt was born on the Continent, and was a stockbroker I before he arrived in Australia about fifi teen years ago. He wa3 in the Victorian Customs Department for some time, and afterwards came to New Zealand. Before he went to Auckland foe was clerk to Mr. James Ashcroft, late Official Assignee in Wellington, and showed such markea ability in the discharge of his duties that he< was promoted to the position of Assignee at Auckland when Mr. John Lawson retired in 1903.
