Another Shannon liquor caae was heard ait the Magistrate's Court yesterday, when Samuel Wkkliff c, a. prohibited person, was charged with being on licensed premises, aJid Thomas Powell with procuring liquor for Wrckljffe. Con>stable Essen said he found Wiekliffe and Powedl in a stable at the Albion Hotel, with a bottle of beer, threequarters full, standing on a faed-bin. Po%yell seized the bottle and smashed it, saying : "You won't get this !" Powell, in his evidence, explained JhaJt he had broken the bottle because it had suddenly, dawned upon him that Wdckliffe was prohibited. The magistrate, held that as Powell was the lessee of the stables they were not licensed premises, ! and gave Powell the benefit of the doubt. Ac to the charge of procuration, the casse was dismissed. A witness in a, case at the Magistrate's Court yesterday deposed that he was oiot a competent worker in his line. The Inspector of Award* produced a number of references, which spoke in high terms of witness's capabilities. Witness objected to these being read in court, and still demurred when the magistrate said there could be no harm in reading such references, which were with a view to prove witness's ability. A new bramch. of the National Bank opens for business to-morrow. Mr. N. Blackmore, late of Wellington, ie manager, and Mr. M 'Donald accountant. At a meeting of the High School Board of Governors, held last night, it was reported that good progress was being made with the «rection.of the new school building, which is replacing that set on. i fire by Powelka, and totally destroyedi. It was decided to again offer £40 for a district scholarship. At the hockey Teunkxn last evening, Mr. H. G. Kerslake, who has been secretary of the Manawa/tu Association for several years, and has resigned prior to leaving for a world's tour, was presented with a gold .sovereign case, filled with sovereigns. Mr. Kerslake during his term as^ secretary has, wifth the assistance of a new executive, brought the association from extreme poverty to comparative affluence, and that his efforts were evidently appreciated was shown by the hearty send-off accorded him last night. '• M.r. Cooper ((president) presided, and presented trie trophies won during the year.
