The weather during last night was the jmost severe experienced in Southland "during all the winter. Snow fell in most .'places, and quite three inches in the interior of the western district. - Heavy showers of hail fell at intervals, which, together with the heavy wind, did considerable damage to the cherry, plum, and pear areas. ; In some districts the mortality amongst yonng lambs must be heaVy. 'j. io •tops of hUls on the high country are covered with a heavy coating of snow, and should a day of warm weather follow immediately, heavy floods will eventuate. ' -'• The weather is now moderating, but ihe temperature is still very low. iWUxTRY WEATHER IN DUNEDIN. DUNEDIN, This Day. ".' The weather is quite wintry, and threatening snow. The thermometer reading is the lowest for years. -~ SNOW AT GORE. '.!_' GORE. This Day. ;;„ The weather was very cold yesterday, and also'to-day. •• Four inches of snow fell early this rooming; 'but had disappeared by noon. Westerly winds and fain make floods probable. The conditions are severe on ':j;oung lambs. LOCAL CONDITIONS. Fulfilling prediction, a southerly of the most, pronounced kind settled clown on Southland and parts of Otago evening. Here; in" Wellington, the weather is on its most charming behaviour, ■the early morning especially being memorably beautiful. According to today's forecast, there is no threat of that southerly reaching here just at prebent to dispel the brightness, though the report speaks of cool and changeable weajther generally. A cold night is predicted.
