LONDON MISSIONARY SOCIETY.
At the Constable-etreet Congregational Schoolroom last, night, the Rev. G. J. Williams, organising secretary of the London Missionary Society, spoke on^the need for a new method of religious' instruction. Mr. Williams emphasised the fact that the method of teaching by lecture was obsolete, and that it was not the teacher's achievements that counted, but the pupil's eucccss. The Mission Study Circle was to help on a new system. Everything could not be gained by just listening to a preacher once a week. Independent study 26 needed, and to this end the society encourages the reading of text-books nnd the Bible. This year "The Approach of Islam" was the %olumo to be considered, and next year "The Decisive Hour of Christian" Missions" would be studied. It was suggested by the speaker that it would be well if members of the various churches met and diecussed the previous Sunday's sermons. It was incidentally pointed out that tho circles were iv no way after the style of debating societies, but that if they were wisely conducted, they should do much to deepen spiritual feeling und knowledge. Mr. YY. F. Eggers, under tho auspices of the C.M.S., delivered a lecture on Benares before a large audience. An advertisemuut )fi\e» io-day'» programme.
Miss Elsie Alpe, whose name was amongst the list of those ladies who passed the higher examination (certificated pianistes) in connection with Trinity College of Music, was a pupil of Mrs. Mackay, and not of St. Mary's Convent, as stated in the press.
