ALLEGED SHEEP-WORRYING.

♦ Before Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., at the Magistrate's Court, Victor Francis Hughes, of Ohariu, farmer, sued Frederick Simeon, of Johnsonville, pettier, for £27 10s damages and expenses as the result of alleged sheep-worrying by defendant's dogs. It was alleged that during some days prior to 12th June last, a flock of 150 sheep belonging to the plaintiff was worried by a dog belonging to Simeon, and seventeen breeding ewes in lamb belonging to the plaintiff were destroyed. Plaintiff accordingly sought to recover £21 Ss (value of tho ewes at 25s each) and £6 5s damages to the flock. Mr. Luckie appeared for the plaintiff, Mr. T. S. Weston for defendant. According to plaintiff's evidence, he found four sheep — fresh and warm — lying in a swamp on one occasion. They had been worried by a dog. Later in the day some neighbours and he discovered defendant's dog actually worrying sheep in a gully ; there were three dead sheep "steaming hot." The dog was shot. The, sheep worried and killed included unshorn breeding ewes in lamb. For bhe defence, evidence was called to show that the offending dog did not belong to defendant, but was owned by defendant's son, who was residing with his father and accordingly came within the definition of "owner" for the purposes of registration as required by the Dog Act. Decision was reserved. PARLIAMENT'S WORK. A lonj day on Bills is before the House if the' Order Paper is followed.
