The proposal to increase the capital of the Talisman from £300,000 to £345,000 by the creation of new shares met with unqualified approval of the London shareholders. Mr. F. C. Auld, the chairman, expressed his regret that the shareholders in England did not show the same lively interest in the affairs of tne company as the shareholders on the other side. The effect of the new capital would be that the dividends would be considerably increased. In seconding the motion, which was carried, Mr. G. "In Australia young men are not great or discriminating readers, but. on the other hand we can say that they are not 'literature hardened.' " remarked Mi\ A. Jameson at the V.M.C.A. Couference this morning, in speaking on the "efficiency of our educational work." By this, explained Mr. Jameson, he meant that the youth of the country were open to conviction and advice, and if good books were put in their way by the V.M.C.A. and like institutions, they would read them, and much good would accrue. On Wednesday evening the "Ladies' Evening" of the Sydney-streot and Northland Primitive Methodist Mutual Improvement Society will be held in the Sydney-street P.M.
