A MHIACULOUS ESCAPE. PALMERSTON, 2nd October. When Messrs. Goring Johnston, Baldwin, Ormond, and Cooper were returning from the Wanganui races yesterday to Palmerston in Mr. Johnston's car, driven by his chauffeur, Barling, a horse shied in front of them as they were approaching Bulls. Barling swung off to avoid it, but the horse and trap came right across the road .in front of the car, which was run over a ditch and up against a fence to try to avoid a collision. The horse came right on top of the car, the shafts of the trap going through the glass screen Barling was knocked insensible, and is suffering from concussion of the brain, but has recovered consciousness. He was carried into Bulls and attended by Dr. Watson. Beyond the breaking of the shafts, no damage was done to the trap or horse, which was driven by an employee of Mr. J. G. Wilson. The driver states that when the horse shied one side of his rein broke, and his pulling on the other, he supposes, pulled the horse across the road. The steering-wheel of the car and the front wheels were damaged, but the occupants other than Barling miraculously escaped. Tho shock stopped the engine. A PETROL DANGER. MASTERTON, 2nd October. While filling a tank of a motor car with petrol last evening, Dr. Cook was badly burnt through the oil igniting, a full 'drum catching fire and causing a big flare. The fire-bell was rung, and the brigade turned out, but no damage was done, as the oil drum was thrown out in the street, where it burned out. A CHRISTCHURCH IN,QUEST. CHRISTCHURCH, 2nd October. An inquest was held this afternoon regarding the death of Mrs. Eathlinda Eyeton, aged about 35, who died suddenly last night. The evidence showed that Mrs. Eyeton fell back suddenly while sitting in her "chair. A doctor was summoned, but found life extinct. Mrs. Eyeton arrived from Auckland about last July, and her husband is supposed to be living in Auckland at present. A verdict was returned of death from heart disease.
