• ♦ A WELL-KNOWN PHILANTHROPIST. O> Telegraph.— lTebs Association.— Copyrlgni/.^ NEW YORK, 12th August. The death is announced of Mr Robert Treat Paine, a well-known American philanthropist, who has endowed many working men's institutions. |Mr. Paine was born in Boston in 183b and graduated at Harvard in 1855 (A M j He was admitted to the Bar in 1859, and practised until 1875, when he retired. In 1879 he organised the Wells Memorial Working Men's Institute and up to the time of his death was its president He was an ex-president of the Working Men's Co-operativo Bank, president of the Associated Charities of Boston, and a member of many charitable'organisations. With his wife, ho created and endowed a trust for charitable purposes, named the Robert Treat Paine Association. For a time ho was a member of the Massachusetts Legislature.]
