LOCAL AND GENERAL, ♦ The mails which left Wellington on the 17th June per the 5.6. Moeraki, and connected at Sydney with the Brindisi mails per the R.M.S. Mahva, arrived in London on the afternoon of the 23rd July. Shortly after 7 o'clock this morning the Fire Brigade was called to suppress an outbreak in the kitchen attached to Mr. Hugh Reid's bakery and dwelling in Hopper-street. The fire was suppressed after some damage had been done to the kitchen wall by the flame fiom a gas ring. There is no insurance on the contents, but it is understood I hat the building — which is owned by Mr. Jamieson, of Wanganui — is insured. Notice has been given by Mr. A. H. Hindmarsh to move at next meeting of the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board that tho motion passed at the last meeting of the board, to the effect that applications should be called for the position of clerk and collector, be rescinded. In consequence of this action applications for the post above referred to can- j not now be called. The board already has a clerk and collector in its service, the appointment having been made two O" three years ago. A novel claim was made by a plaintiff in a civil case heard in the Magistrate's Court this morning. He had ordered and accepted delivery of a suit of clothes from a tailoring firm, and paid £5 5s for it. When he tried it on, he was not satisfied with the fit, and had an alteration made. In court, to-day he claimed fll 10s for "labour in calling for the suit." He also asserted that the material was not the same as he had picked out. The Magistrate, after hearing the plaintiff, characterised the claim as a most extraordinary one, and entered a nonsuit*
