THE PRICE OF BUTTER.
y i - A new turn was given in the local butter war to-day, when the price of certain brands advanced £d wholesale, to sell at Is Id per pound retail. All standard brands of butter ar^ now on the same footing a3 to price — Is Id per pound. It ■is stated by those in tho butter 'trade that to supply retailers with butter ■.under Hid pel pound entails a loss, and it costs almost that price in bulk at the factories. The public has been getting the benefit of the competition among wholesale suppliers. Prices in London keep up well, the wholesale average price there being for great quantities -ll|d per pound, so that in Wellington to-day consumers are paying pence per pound less for their own butter than the English consumer. In times past this has not always been the case. It has happened thai London retailers have bought New Zealand butter cheaper at '.the time than New Zealand shopkeepers could buy it in the country of origin. Usually at this time of year butter is locally much dearer than Is Id per "pound.
