MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
<• ( To-day's sitting of the Magistrate's Court was presided over by Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M. A seventieth' conviction was entered against Mary M'Kegney, and she was fined 10s for inebriety, with a twentyfour hours' option. Ihree first-offenders forfeited their bail (10s each) ; four were fined 5s with the usual option; another was ordered to pay medical expenses (10s 6d), in default spend 48 hours in gaol ; one woman was convicted and discharged. Annie Cain, deemed to be an incorrigible logue, with thirty-three previous convictions, was sentenced to one year's imprisonment. An information against Alfred Cross, alias Krau6e, of thoft of a silver chain and a rolled gold chain, valued at £2, the property of .Robert James Tutteet. was dismissed, the evidence being inconclusive. At the Mount Cook Police Court today Mr. F. J. Lissington, J.P., dealt with the following cases of drunkenness : — Alfred Olund, seven days' imprisonment ; Eoderick M'Leod Chester, 40s, or seven days; Wm. Edward Boulton, Patrick Conlan, and Guy Cockburn, each 10s or 48 hours.
Thei'e are now over 400 adult teachers in the services of the Wellington Education Board. One of Otago's medical students who graduated last year, Dr. W. H. Pettit, will preach in the Vivian-street Baptist Church on Sundny night. Dr. Pettit is proceeding to India in October to undertake the medical work which Dr. Charles North has been compelled to relinquish.
