PRODUCE MARKET. HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPORT.
The Commerce and Tourist Division of the Department of Agriculture, Commerce and Tourists, has received the following cablegram from the High Commissioner, dated London, 16th July : — Mutton — The market is very weak and there is a large supply on hand. Average price to-day for Canterbury is 3£d ; North Island, 3^d per lb. Lamb — The market is quiet. There is a dull sale for heavy carcases. Canterbury 4gd per lb. Other than Canterbury, 4|3. Beef — The market is dull and the stock on hand is heavy. N.Z. hinds, 3^d ; fores, 2£d per lb. Butter — There has been no alteration in the market since last week. N.Z. 109s ; Danish, 115s per cwt. New Zealand butter is in very limited supply. and supplies from the Continent are esCheese — The market is quiet but, firm. There is a better demand for cheese. N.Z. white, 56s 6d ; coloured, 54s 6d per cwt. Hemp — The market is very depressed, and is dependent on Manila reports. N.Z. good fair on spot, per ton £24 ; fair grade, £22 ; fair current Manila, £21 10s. Forward shipment — N.Z. good fair, £24; fair grade, £21 10s; fair current Manila, £21 10s. The output from Manila for the week was 26,000 bales. Cocksfoot Seed — The market is quiet, i The average price foi bright, clean N.Z. seed, weighing 171bs per bushel, on spot, is 66s per cwt. Wheat — The market is slightly firmer. Oats — The market is dull and the supplies are large. Beans — The market is rather more active, and supplies are increasing. Peas — The market is dull on account of heavy arrivals. Wool — The market remains firm.
On Saturday evening the Wellington field force of the Colonial Mutual Life was entertained at a dinner given by the management in honour of the District Superintendent, Mr. E. L. Burnea, and his staff, who have won the chairman's V.C. medal offered for competition amongst the superintendents', numbering nearly 50, throughout the service. Mr. J. B. Harcourt, the society's chairman of directors for New Zealand 1 , presided, and in res-ponding to the toast of Our Society," announced that he was- co impressed with the fine work being done by the representatives in the Dominion that he had decided to present a medal for competition in New Zealand. The prizes won by Messrs Buchanan and Dowell were also handed over by him. Mr. P. D. Leslie, the Resident Secretary, s-ketch-ed the history of the Colonial Mutual since its foundation in 1873 by the late Mr. Jacques Martin right up to the present "Forward Movement" policy inaugurated by Mr. James Fullar, actuary and secretary at the principal office. Mr. A. G. Melville, manager of Industrial Department, and Chief Superintendent Ordinary Department, also spoke, complimenting the Wellington Division and DistTict .Superintendent. Mr. Burnes responded. He said that the final result was in a large measure owing to the loyalty and high grade qualities of tho agents-. Mr. Burnes, as a result of his win, to Melbourne shortly, wherehe will receive the V.C. medal from the chairman of directors personally. Messrs. Kenny, Hill, Wobb, and Melville contributed musical and other items. Tenders in connection with the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board •will be closed to-morrow at noon.
