HOCKEY. THE SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP.
, THE SEMI-FINALS..
Karori (2) v. United (1). Victoria College (3) v. V.M.C.A. (0). Wellington (2) v. Metropolitan (2). The semi-irnals of the men's senior hockey championship were played on Saturday, and the result of the games leaves the issue between Karori and Victoria College. Although the grounds were heavy on Saturday, some of the oonitests were interesting, and in the case of Karori and United, quite exciting. KARORI (2) v. UNITED (1). United and Karori met for the second time this season. One end of the ground, No. 3, Day's Bay, was in a very bad condition. The circle was not distinguishable, and it was difficult to hit the ball out of the mud. Neither side succeeded in scoring in the first spell, though Karori had many opportunities. In the second stage of the game, however, they obtained two goals in succession. The first was soon after the recommencement. United had conceded a couple of corners. Following on the second, Davies, whose passage into goal was blocked, passed out to Pope on the left. The latter, from a difficult position, cleanly hit into the net. Karori, 1 , United, 0. Next, Murphy, Davies, and Hunt, by an interchange of short passes, manoeuvred through United's defence, and finding an opening, Davies hit hard into the net. Later, a free-hit was given United for "sticks" against Spiers. From this they reached Karori's circle, where, from some disi&nce out, Brotherton sent the ball between the posts. Karori, 2; United, 1. This was the final score. Mr. k/. S. Falconer refereed. VICTORIA COLLEGE (3) v. V.M.C.A. (0). College and V.M.C.A. played on No. 1 ground, Day's Bay. College attacked ' very willingly, and a bad miss by Holmes (Y.M.'s "full") nearly ended in their scoring. The allcoloured forwards, however, saved what looked like a serious situation, and play was carried to the othei end of the field. Here V.M.C.A. held their opponents comfortably for some time. Finally, College broke away, and ab one time they looked specially dangeious. The forwards were taking the ball up-field, and when near the goal Smith or Beere sent in a shot, and the whistle went for "sticks" as the ball went between the posts. The first spell resulted without any score. College, shortly after resumption, scored a well-earned goal through the agency of Bogle. The greens (College) were not vet satisfied, and before very long Smith registered their second and third goal. The former success was off a shot by C. Strack, and the latter was clean hit. Thero was no further score. The referee was Mr. K.- C. Morpeth. WELLINGTON (2) v. METROPOLITAN (2). Wellington and Metropolitan met on No. 2 ground. After five 'minutes' play, Wellington scored through the agency of Rundle, and five minutes later the same player scored again. This was all the .scoring done in the first half. 'Metropolitan, after 15 minutes of play in the second spell, scored, Kitching being responsible, and before time sounded Hall found the net and' made the scores ■equal. Mr. Turner was referee. JUNIOR. Wellington had an easy win over Greggs, scoring 8 goals, as against their opponents 0 The scorers were Tewsley (3), Bay (2), Turton (2), and Thirkell (1).
