GAMBLING AND FIGHT PICTURES.

After the usual service of the Wesley Church on Sunday evening a special meeting- of the congregation was held to discuss the gambling evil and other eorial questions. The Rev. A. J. Ssamer moved the following motion : "That inasmuch, as ib is the duty of the State to attend closely to the moral and social welfare of tho community, and true men of every shad© of religion and political opinion recognise the demoralisation wrought by legalised gambling, the members of this church and congregation earnestly request the Government to so j legislate in so f ar as legislation may destroy this demoralising vico. Further w> 1 request our own Member of Parliament to put the moral and social welfare of the community, before the financial interests of racing or other clubs and. by | both voice nad vote, do his utmost to rid us of the curs© of the legalised bookmaker and totalisator. The motion was unanimously carried. On behalf of the Wesleyan Young Mens' Institute Mr. E. Ackroyd then moved the adoption of the following motion: — "That we as members and congregation of this church urge the Government to prohibit the exhibition in New Zealand' of any picaures representing the Johnston v. Jeffries fight or any portion of this brutal contest and' so by such prohibition prevent the degradation of our national moral standard, which should' be, and is far above pandering to the vicious tasks of tho few who aro so uncivilised and' unChristian as to delight in such scenes of brutality." This was also unanimously adopted.
