MYSTERIOUS VESSEL.
A POSSIBLE. EXPLANATION. By Telecraph.— Press Association.— Copyright. (Received July 11, 10 a.m.) PERTH, This Day. The mysterious vessel seen at the end of May last, near' the reefs between Maud's Landing and Cape Darquhar, is now supposed to have been a schooner* Beche de Mer fishing. [Some excitement was caused at Carnarvon on 22nd. June last by a report that a large one-funnelled steamer, painted grey, had anchored about the end of the previous month near the reefs between Maud's Landing and Cape F-arquhar. Rowing boats were stated to be working between the steamer and the shore. Some, blacks put off to the steamer, and reported that only Chinese were aboard, and that there were no white men on the ship. One suggestion was that as the blacks cannot tell Chinese from Japanese, the mysterious vessel might have been a Japanese warship secretly surveying the coast. Later it was suggested that the stranger was a cattle vessel looking for a suitable landingplace at which to ship animals from the stations on that part of the coast.]
