The current number of the Victoria College magazine, The Spike, is, as usual, hill of much that is sure to please the "house," and a little that will appeal to outsiders. Bright and topical verse and sketches, succinct reviews of all the college organisation, exXTical and athletic, make up the groater part of the little volume. The matter of university reform is reviewed in a knowledgeable way; and in a brief comment in tho text, "College Progress," it is stated : — "We are menaced by the same danger as that with which the American colleges are now grappling, but in our case the danger is even more serious. The varied and multitudinous activities of student Jife threaten to absorb the whole attention of the students, and prevent all systematic work and the acquirement of real knowledge. Study and reflection, investigation, and discussion on literary or scientific subjects have taken a secondary place." The directors of the Thorndon Bowling Club propose to fix the annual subscription at £2 12s 6d. A case of interest to medical practitioners and nurses was heard at the Magistrate's Court to-day, when Alice \ Edmonds was charged that, not being a registered nurse, she practised as a midwife mi a case not of emergency. Defendant, who was represented by Mr. P. W. Jackson, denied the allegation. Th© evidence for the prosecution was to the effect that defendant, who had been engaged in a case three months prior to the absolute need for a midwife and medical services, contiinied her attendance, and the child died when only a few day* old. Under section 15^ of the statute, every woman is liable to a fin^ not exceeding £20, who, not beingi -registered under the Act, practises as a midwife, or takes the title or any namo or description implying that she is registered under the Act or is qualified to practise as -a midwife. Counsel for defendant based his defence on a proviso to this clause, to the effect that the penalty would not apply to any woman rendering assistance in a case of emergency. He called evidence to show that the particular case was one of emergency. His Worship, however, was not convinced that the case was of the description claimed, and considered that the evidence was against Edmondte. Defendant was-convicted and- fined' 40s, with costs 9s, the alternative being seven days' imprisonment. In another column Messrs.
