ART GALLERY.
TO THR EDITOR. Sir, — Mr. Rayward, in his letter in your issue of the 30th June, says the* newly-established Art Club is evolving r a definite proposition for an Art Gallery worthy of the city. I had not previously heard of it, nor had other members of the club who have spoken to me on the subject. He states that at the opening of the club Sir J. G. Ward stated the Government would be willing to support a proposal for a National Art Gallery. I was present, but -did not 'hear it, and it does not appear in the Teports of the speech. I have publicly, as president of the academy, urged a claim for Stato aid to Art, but as I Tegar'd the local interests to be such as would deter a Government from establishing a National Gallery, I have urged upon the Municipal Council the duty of providing the gallery, and upon the Government the duty of affording State aid for the purchase, of works of art for the principal public art galleries of the Dominion, and I understood Sir J. G. Ward's remarks to go no further than the expression of a willingness on the part of the Government to-assist in doing what is necessary to develop and cultivate the artistic sentiment of the people, and this, Lhope, is on the eve of being given effect to. — I am, etc., H. S. WARDELL, President N.Z.A.F.A. 2nd July, 1910.
