Alice 'Carton, aged eleven, was beaten to death in a shocking manner with a broomhandle by the housekeeper, a cousin of her father. The woman subsequently attempted to commit suicide. When- she recovered consciousness slie stated that she beat the girl for tolling uhteuihs. She was distracted when she- found that the child was dead, and tried •to commit suicide.
