FIRE IN CEMENT WORKS.
DAMAGE OVER £3000. fBT IBI£GIiAPH— PE3S3 ASSOCIATION 1 DUNEDIN, 2nd July. A serious fire broke out in the BurnBide Cement Company's Works at Burn?i£? ab , out 5 °' cloc . k this morning. When the fire was discovered it had a strung hold, but a bucket brigade did splendid work in keeping the names in check. The fire started in or near the coal stores, but the origin is not known. Nearly 600 tons of cement, ready for bagging, valued at close ,on £1500, were stored in this wing. The flames obtained their strongest hold among wooden bins containing cement. Two out of six electrical motors were practically destroyed, but how far the other motoro and machinery have been injured it is hard to tell at present, the roof haying collapsed and covered them in debris. It is certain that the gear and belting are utterly destroyed, and these, with wiring and general electric installation, are expensive items. The Avails and steel girders are all that is left of the wing whero the fire began. The men were working till midnight last night, and everything appeared safe when they left. The Bumside Lime and Cement Company has been unfortunate. A little over two and a half years ago a wooden building they were erecting was blown down, and it was in consequence of that accident that they built the present place in brick. The Guardian office holds all the insurance, totalling £12,000 — buildings £2750, machinery £6750, stock £1400, oil engine £100, electric motors and installation £100. The damage is hard to estimate yet, but possibly it will amount to over £3000. An alarm of fire is given at the Brigade Station within 20 seconds, when the Reichel F"ire Alarm is used ; 10 per cent, rebate on premiums given. H. A. Smith and Co., Cuba-st. — Advt. The Minimax hand fire extinguisher is just the thing to put out a fire. A boy or girl can use it. A. T. Bate, Nathan's Buildings, will tell you all about it. — Advt.
