JtaESS ASSOCIATION.! SUCCESS OF CONCILIATION. STATEMENT BY A COMMISSIONER. CHRISTCHURCH, 2nd July. "Have you seen any signs that the arbitration and conciliation system is outgrowing its usefulness?" a reporter asked Mr. J. R. Triggs, Conciliation Commissioner. "I believe tne amended scheme is working admirably," Mr. Triggs Teplied. "I need only refer to my recent vis-it to the south as an illustration. In one cr.se there- this week one of the employers in the dispute said be was certainly not prepared to give an increase in wages asked by the workers. We had a friendly meeting around the table, and I pointed out that he was paying lower wages than weTe paid to an ordinary labourer in- the street, while his workers were engaged in much more unpleasant labour. He at once saw that there was a great deal in the argument, and immediately agreed' to give an increase. Every employer connected with the industry signed the agreement of his own accord, and a dispute which might have caused much unpleasantness was settled without any feeling and to the satisfaction of both sides. This is only one case out of many, but it may be taken as a typical instance of the operation of the conciliation provisions inserted in. the Act a few years ago." TARANAKI OIL.
