"EATING" AT HUNTLY.
MAHUTA AND MR. CARROLL. A day or two ago some thrilling words, attributed to Mahuta, were telegraphed from Huntly. The Maori King was credited with saying that Mr. Carroll would either eat the natives (metaphorically) or they would eat him. It is stated now that Mahuta was misinterpreted, and was not so picturesque in his diction. Similarly the official chronicle robs Mr. Henare Kaihau of much of the burning narrative debited to him the other day. It is said now that he did not ask the Minister to talk in terms of pakeha gold for the Maoris' estate, but he wished to indicate that the Maoris would be prepared to argue with the pakelia on business lines. Briefly, the chief result of the Huntly gathering is that the Native Minister has an assurance that the natives are prepared to dispose of 180,000 acres for closet settlement. Most of this land will be occupied by Maoris, but about 60,000 acres will be at the option of tho pakeha. Altogether about 600,000 acres are to bo brought into better use than they have been in the past, and it is Mr. Carroll's belief that the natives themselves will do most of the development work.
