CRITICISM OF MR. MYERS'S CANDIDATURE.

[BT XELEORAPH — SPECIAL TO THE POST.] AUCKLAND, This Day. Severe criticism of Mr. Myers, a candidate for the Auckland East seat, was indulged in at a temperance meeting last > night by Mr. T. E. Taylor, M.P. (Christchurch). He said it was amazing that a city such as Auckland should think it minecessary to challenge the ambitions of the biggest brewer in the city to get a seat in the Legislature. He had never heard a. single thing against Mr. Myers personally. He was, no doubt, a thoroughly good citizen, but now he was seeking a favour at the hands of the electors he was entitled to have the searchlight of criticism focussed on him. The wealth of the brewers of Auckland had been made by pandering to the susceptibilities of the unfortunate working classes, who had not in their homes the reasonable comforts of life. Proceeding, Mr. Taylor admitted that Mr. Myers had carried out in conjunction with other public men some large municipal reforms but the people paid for them. Mr. Myers had been at no personal sacrifice and the people of Auckland did not yet know what these works were going to cost them ; but even if Mr. Myers had been a success as a municipal reformer that- did not necessarily say he possessed qualifications for the higher sphere of political life. Mr. Taylor said he came to Auckland not to make speeches but to endeavour to persuade a candidate to come out and contest Auckland East against the brewer and monopolist.
