MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., presided at to-day's sitting of the Magistrate's Court. For inebriety, Robert Hansen was convicted and discharged. To a further chaigc of wilfully damaging seven bottles of English stout, valued at 7s 7d, the properly of Messrs. Laery and Co., accu&ed pleaded guilty. Evidence of the police was to the etfect that Hansen had been drinking at the New Zealander hotel, and interfered with the unloading of some cases of stout, with the result that a case was dropped and seven bottles weie broken. Accused was convicted and fined 20s, ordered to pay the co?t of the lost fctout, in default sentenced to 48 hours' imprisonment. Joseph O'Hanlon pleaded not guilty to a charge of using obscene language. The evidence was against him, and h« was fined £3 with witness's expenses, or have the option of spending 21 days in gaol. A similar charge wa,s preferred against James Crimmins, alias Vincent, who also denied the allegation. To further charges of being an idle and disorderly person in that (1) he has insufficient lawful means of support, and (2) habitually consorts with Teputed prostitutes, Crimmins entered further pleas of not guilty. The police ga\e accused a bad character as an old offender with a "record." Crimmins was convicted on all three charges. For using obscene language he was sentenced to one month's imprisonment ; on the other counts he was ordered to undergo three months" im prisonment for each offence, the latter terms to be roncui'i-ent. Sydney Sylvester, adjudged the putative father of an illegitimate child, was ordered to pay 7s a week towards its maintenance, imd medical expenses £6 6s. Two charges were preferred against Edward John Faikiner : (1) Opening a postal packet lrom Auckland, contrary to his duty, addressed lo Louisa Robeil-t-on; (2) by means of false pi etences aaid misstatemente, inducing a postal officer to deliver to himself a packet sent by post from Auckland, not addressed to or intended for himself, but addressed lo Louisa Rcbert&on. Accused was represented by Mr. Fell, and was remanded till the oth June. At the Mount Cook' Police Court, this morning, before Mr. Lachman, J.P., the following cases for drunkenness were dealt with: — Frank Hansen and two first-offenders were fined ss, with an option of 24 hours' imprisonment, and Eva Mary Vine was fined 10s, the alternative'being fixed at 48 hours in gaol. Mr. R. E. Wood, who has resigned his position on the itaff of Messrs Kempthorae, Prosscr, and Co.. was last evening pre-sented with a fjokl watch and chain by members of the staff. The presentation wa; made by Mr. W. Jack, who referred to Mr. Wood's long connection with the firm (nearly thirty years) and the esteem and regard entertained for him by members of the staff.
