Inanksgiving service for the birth of the Union were held in every church- in. South Africa this morning, except whera the combined services had been arranged! an the open ah-. Ten thousand school children paraded at Johannesburg and; sang hymns. •> " ' Union Jack tableaux descriptive of th« Union were also arranged. 31st May was cho&sn as the date on which the Union should become operative, ifeat being tho date of the signing at Pretoria of tha Vereemging Peace Treaty. AT PRETORIA CATHEDRAL. LORD GLADSTONE TAKES THE OATH. -GOVERNOR-GENERAL CREATES A* GOOD IMPRESSION. (Received June 1, 9.30 a.m.) PRETORIA, 31st May. Lord and Lady Gladstone, members of the Cabinet, and a large congregation, attended a special service at Pretoria Cathedral. Thence the Governor-General, the Ministers, the Chief Justice, ant other judges proceeded to the Legi&latiwi Assembly Chamber. It was a eombr» gathering, owing to the mounting for King Edward. The Commission appointing Lord Gladstone was read in English and Dutch, and then Lord Gladstone, who on 19th May, at Capetown, had been sworn a« High Commissioner, took the oath as Governor-General. The oaths were next administered to members of the Cabinet. Lord and Lady Gladstone created ft good impression. AUSTRALIAN CONGR-A- '"' TULATIONS. (Received June 1, 9.30 a.m.) MELBOURNE. This Day.
