SERVANT PROBLEM.

PRIME MINISTER INTERVIEWED-. POSSIBLE HELP. fBT TXMGBAPH — VBKSS ASSOCIATION.! CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. A deputation interviewed Sir Joseph Ward this morning to seek Government assistance in the solution of the problem of domestic help. Mrs. C. C. Farr, who has been largely responsible for the local agitation, explained to Sir Joseph the trials and troubles of mothers of families wsho could not get help in domestic work. She put in a petition signed by medical men to the effect that overwork was the cause of many illnesses. The Prime Minister said he was in complete sympathy with the movement. The Government had not ceased its efforts to bring out domestic helps. The snipping companies had a comprehensive and well-established system of attracting immigrants to the various colonies, and the system had worked so well that Norway had objected to it. lie thought New Zealand would have to look mainly to the United States for domestic helps, and she was at a disadvantage as compared with Canada and the United States, because of the distance. The problem might be solved by reducing the cost of the sea voyage because New Zealand was competing with Canada, and the fare between England and Canada was as low as £1. Whether the Government should offer free passages to girls was quite another question, but that was a possible direction in which assistance might be given. He would lay the representations before his colleagues
