4> WANGANUI WINTER MEETING. i (BY TELEGRAPH — PE.ESS ASSOCIATION.] WANGANUI, This Day. The Wanganui Jockey Club winter meeting opened to-day. There is a largo attendance. The tracks are in good order, but a cold westerly wind is blowing, and rain is threatening. Results :—: — Borough Handicap, six furlongs. — Boanerges, 9.3, 1; Parula, 7.7, 2; Emblem, 7.6, 3. Scatched— Lethean. The big field gave a lot of trouble at the start, and finally St. Bill and True Shot got away with a slight advantage, BalFarat and Rareroa being left. Boanerges took charge at the entrance to the straight and won comfortably by a length and a half. Time, Imin 15 4-ssec. Wanganui Steeplechase, of 425sovs; three miles.— Jack Pot, 10.12, 1 ; Lovell, 9.13, 2; Oryx, 9.9, 3. Scratched— Senorita. A splendid race. Sir Lethejumped over the- first obstacle in the lead, but also cleared over the rail on to the wrong track, and had to be pulled up. Lovell took the lead, and maintained that position until the last jump, where Jack Pot went to the front and won by two lengths. Oryx was close up third. Time, 6min 7 2-ssec. Moccasin and Pharos broke down, and Bullworth's saddle slipped. A protest against Jack Pot for allegedly boring Lovell in the Steeplechase was disallowed. Electric Hack Handicap, six furlongs. — Faunus, 8.4, 1; Golden Loop, 8.11, 2; Voca, 7.11, 3. Scratched — St-ourton. Faunus led all the way, and won by over a length, with Voca a fair third. Time, lmm 16 ]-3sec. Kaitoke Hack Hurdles, of 100 soys; one mile and three-quarters. — Merry Lawn, 9.1, 1; Nightmare, 10.1, 2; Pikopo, 11.5, 3. Scratched — Woolloomooloo. Nightmare led to the straight, where MeTry Lawn took command, and won by three lengths, a similar distance between second and third. Time, Zfcnin 17 2-ssec. NORTH OTAGO FJXTURE. OAMARU, This Day. The North Otago winter meeting opened to-day in ideal racing weather. The attendance is large. Results :—: — Empire Hurdles; one and a half miles. —Stone Ginger, 10.12, 1; Whatakura, 11.9, 2 ; Rifle Range, 9.9, 3. Time, 2min 52£ sec. Tokarahi Welter Handicap ; seven furlongs. — Waiju, 10.0, 1 ; Fisticuff, 9.4, 2 ; Armamento, 9.9, 3. Time, Imin 30 1-5 sec. Trial Plate, four furlongs, — Oblong, 1; Beau Brocade, 2; Colleen Mary, 3. Scratched — Larkspur, Royal Step, Peridot, Palette, and Nithsdale. Won by a length and a half. Time, 50sec. LEO SERIOUSLY INJURED. AUCKLAND, This Day. While schooling at Ellerslie this morning the Great Northern Steeplechase candidate Leo failed to rise at the water jump leading into the straight, and turned right over. His rider (Phillips) escaped injury, but the horse was unable to rise, and it is feared his back is broken.
